Everett Dirksen Commemorated on a U.S.P.S. Stamp

The 15-cent Everett Dirksen commemorative stamp was issued at Pekin, Illinois, on January 4, 1981, anniversary of the longtime policital leader's birth.  Eight printing plates were certified for the Dirksen stamp which is based on a pencil sketch of the Senate Minority leader by artist Ron Adair.  The sketch closely follows a photograph taken by David Douglas Duncan shortly before Dirksen's 1969 death.  The stamp was printed in gray on white stock.
