Everett M. Dirksen (Bradley, Delta Sigma 1960) represented the State of Illinois in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1933 – 1949 and the U.S. Senate from 1951-1969. As Senate Minority Leader for a decade, he played a highly visible and key role in the politics of the 1960s, including helping to write and pass the Civil Rights Act of 194 and that of 1968, both landmarks of civil rights legislation. He is the only known Pike to be featured on a U.S. postage stamp. In 1972, Dirksen’s service to the country was further honored when one of the U.S. Senate Office Buildings in Washington, D.C. was named for him.
