Granville H. Walling served in the U.S. Army Air Corps as a First Lieutenant with the 871st Bomber Squadron, 497th Bomb Group, Very Heavy, during World War II. The pilot on B-29 Superfortress (#42-63413), he disappeared while on a mission from Saipan (North Mariana Islands) to Nagoya, Japan, on December 18, 1944. The bomber was last seen approximately 80 nautical miles from Iwo Jima. He was declared dead on December 18, 1945. He was awarded the Air Medal and Purple Heart.
