George Hartung served as a Major, Special Service in the Headquarters Assembly Area Command during World War II. He was killed in the line of duty on June 24, 1945 in France while assigned to the 7th Army Area Center in charge of War Prisoners. He is buried at the Epinal American Cemetery, Dinozé, France.
