Leonard Bales served as a Second Lieutenant in the U.S. Army Signal Corps in World War II. As an instructor in Fort Monmouth, New Jersey, he contracted pneumonia on a night exercise. He entered the hospital on December 24, 1942 and later transferred to Fort Dix, New Jersey, where he died of complications of pneumonia on June 22, 1943.
