Albert Knechtel served in the U.S. Army as a First Lieutenant in the 5th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division, Infantry during the Korean War. He was killed in action by small arms fire on September 19, 1950 at Waegwan, Korea during an attack near Taegu. He received the following awards: Purple Heart, Combat Infantryman Badge, Korean Service Medal, United Nations Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Korean Presidential Unit Citation, and Republic of Korea War Service Medal.
