John Cole, Jr. served in the U.S. Army as a First Lieutenant in the 6th Infantry, 1st Armored Division during World War II. On November 8, 1942, he went missing in action aboard the HMS Walney during Operation Reservist, an attack on Oran Algeria that formed part of Operation Torch. Lieutenant Cole was awarded the Bronze Star and Purple Heart.
