James G. Van Devender served in the U.S. Marine Corps as a First Lieutenant with the V Marine Scout Bombing Squadron 333, Marine Aircraft Group 33, 3rd Marine Air Wing, Fleet Marine Force during World War II. Involved with dive-bomber squadron training at Bogue Field, Cherry Point, North Carolina, he died on December 5, 1943, in a plane crash in the Delaware River.
