James W. Rickels served in the U.S. Army Air Corps as a Second Lieutenant with the 449th Bomb Group, 716th Squadron during World War II. A Navigator, he was killed on February 22, 1944, when his B-24 was shot down over Graz, Austria, while on a bombing mission to Regensburg, Germany.
