Joseph Combs, Jr. served in the U.S. Army Air Corps as a Second Lieutenant in the 12th Air Force, 35th Troop Carrier Squadron in World War II. On April 18, 1945, while serving as a co-pilot with a C-47 troop transport, he was killed when his plane crashed in a storm in the Alps near Florence, Italy.
