James Carter served in the U.S. Marine Corps as a Lieutenant in B Company, 1st Battalion, 9th Marines, 3rd Marine Division in the Vietnam War. He died on June 7, 1967 from wounds received in hostile fire in Quang Tri Province, South Vietnam.
