Joseph Newton, Jr. served in the U.S. Navy Air Corps, Lieutenant (Junior Grade) with the Torpedo Squadron Six (VT-6) during World War II. He died on August 10, 1945 while on a bombing raid on the Matsushima Airfield in northern Honshu Island, Japan. The torpedo bomber which he was piloting was riddled in the mission over Tokyo and went down in the ocean off the Japanese coast. He received the Air Medal with 3 Gold Stars and the Purple Heart.
