John W. Wilson served in the U.S. Navy as an Ensign during World War II. A Naval Aviator, he was killed on February 20, 1942, when his plane was shot down at Bougainville near the Gilbert Islands at Rabaul, New Britain. He was awarded the Purple Heart.
