Collier Olive served with the Aviation Corps as a First Lieutenant with the 147th Aero Squadron during World War I. As a Corporal with Company D, 359th Infantry, he was recognized for extraordinary heroism in action near Villers-devant-Dun, France on November 1-2, 1918. He courageously led his squad thru heavy machine gun and artillery fire and drove off several machine gun crews. Next day, after being wounded by fire from a heavy Maxim gun, he continued the advance and captured the gun. He died on January 9, 1919 from pneumonia in France. He is credited with shooting down five German planes.
