Rance A. Thompson served in the U.S. Navy Reserve as a Lieutenant Junior Grade during World War II. He died on December 28, 1943, when his airplane crashed in the sea north of St. Mawgan Airdrome near Watergate Beach, Cornall, England. He had been ferrying a group of officers to the United States when his ship crashed.
