Samuel Cain, Jr. served in the U.S. Army Air Forces as a Second Lieutenant in the 428th Bombardment Squadron, 310th Bombardment Group, 12th Air Force in World War II. A pilot stationed in the Mediterranean Theater of Operations at Corsica, he flew on more than a dozen missions in the Italian theater. On November 11, 1944 he was co-pilot of B-25 on a bombing mission to a railroad bridge at Calliano, Italy. The aircraft was shot down by flak and was last sighted as it crashed in the mountains approximately six miles east of Arco, Italy. He went missing in action and was declared deceased on November 11, 1944.
