David Chaikin served in the U.S. Navy as a Lieutenant (Junior Grade). He died on March 21, 1991 when two Navy submarine-hunting planes (P-3 Orions) collided over the Pacific. The all-weather planes were engaged in an anti-submarine warfare exercise when they collided in bad weather. The planes were on a training mission from Moffett Naval Air Station near San Jose.
