Ray Lawrence served in the U.S. Army as a Sergeant in Headquarters Company, 1st Battalion, 279th Infantry Regiment, 45th Infantry Division during the Korean War. He died on the night of July 7, 1953 when the bunker he slept in near Sadanggol, North Korea, caved in suffocating him. He received the following awards: Combat Infantryman Badge, the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal and the Korean War Service Medal.
