William S. Ryberg served in the U.S. Army as a Second Lieutenant with the Company C, 87th Mountain Infantry Regiment, 10th Mountain Infantry. He was killed in action during the Italian Campaign in Castel d'Aiano, Emilia-Romagna, Italy, on March 3 1945. He had been leading his platoon to higher ground when he was struck by machine gun fire. He was posthumously awarded the Silver Star.
