George D. Stallings served in the U.S. Army Air Corps as a Second Lieutenant in the 859th Bomber Squadron, 492nd Bomb Group, Heavy, during World War II. A bombardier on a B-24 Liberator (#42-50719), he died on August 6, 1944, when his damaged aircraft returned from a bombing mission over Hamburg, Germany, and clipped wings with another B-24 during an emergency landing. He was awarded the Purple Heart.
