Raleigh A. Shoemaker served in the U.S. Army Air Corps as a Major with the 413th Bomb Squadron, 96th Bombardment Group, Troop H during World War II. He was killed on May 8, 1944, when his B-17 Flying Fortress (#42-97631) was hit by flak, exploded and crashed at Kirchlinteln, Germany.
