Chester Merrill served in the U.S. Army as a Private with the 397th Infantry Regiment, 100th Infantry Division. A Combat Infantry and Advance Scout, he was killed in action on April 6, 1945 in Heilbronn, Germany. He had trained in the Army Specialized Training Program at The Citadel, Charleston, South Carolina. He was awarded a Purple Heart and Bronze Star.
