Herman Davis served in the U.S. Merchant Marines as a Seaman First Class Instructor in the Preliminary Training Department, Maritime Training Station, at Sheepshead Bay, Brooklyn, New York. On August 24, 1944, he was on a cruise with over sixty trainees in his charge when he was taken ill and died of a heart attack.
