Charles C. Winder served in the U.S. Army Air Corps as a Second Lieutenant with the 6th Bomber Squadron, 29th Bomber Group, Very Heavy, 20th Air Force during World War II. On May 5, 1945, he took off in a B-29A Superfortress (#42-93953) from North Field on Guam for a precision bombing mission against Tachiarai Airfield, Kyushu, Japan. The aircraft was shot down by Japanese fighters and crashed, possibly at sea. He is memorialized on the Tablets of the Missing at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific in Honolulu, Hawaii. He was awarded the Air Medal and the Purple Heart.
