Wayne C. Steele served in the U.S. Army Air Corps as a Lieutenant with the Fifth Ferrying Division during World War II. He was killed on January 27, 1944, when his P-38 fighter plane crashed near Delhi, Louisiana. He was on a routine combat training flight out of Love Field, Dallas, Texas, when the accident occurred.
