James Hail served in U.S. Army Air Corps as a Second Lieutenant during World War II. He was part of the Advanced Pilot Class 40-A stationed at Kelly Field, San Antonio, Texas. He was killed on June 17, 1940 when the bomber he was flying collided with another bomber over Mitchel Field, Long Island, New York.
