Albert Benjamin Chandler

A.B. “Happy” Chandler (Transylvania, Kappa 1919) was a 1956 presidential hopeful who did not make the ballot.  He resigned as governor of Kentucky in 1939 when he was appointed to the U.S. Senate to fill the vacancy created by the death of Marvell Mills Logan.  Chandler was elected to fill the remainder of the term in 1940 and won a full term in 1942.  After leaving the Senate in 1945, he served as the commissioner of baseball from 1945-1951.  In 1955, he ran for and won another term as governor of Kentucky.
