John Evans served in the U.S. Marine Corps as a First Lieutenant in A Company, 1st Battalion, 23rd Marines, 4th Marine Division during World War II. He was killed in action on June 18, 1944 on Saipan in the Northern Mariana Islands. He had embarked on the USS La Salle (AP-102) on January 13, 1944 at San Diego for movement overseas, landing on Roi Island in the Marshall Islands on February 1, 1944 and participating in combat operations there until February 4. On February 18, he arrived at Camp Maui, near Haiku before embarking on the USS Callaway (APA-35) on May 12, 1944 for landing rehearsals. On June 15, 1944, he landed at Blue Beach One on Saipan D-Day, and he participated there until his death.
