John Deaver served in the U.S. Army as a First Lieutenant Chaplain in the 3rd Battery, 61st Infantry Regiment, 5th Infantry Division, American Expeditionary Forces (AEF) in World War I. He enlisted on June 15, 1918 and was commissioned on July 5, 1918. He was killed in action on October 13, 1918 in Northern Argonne. He is buried in Romagne, France.
