Luther Cartwright, Jr. served in the U.S. Army Air Corps as a first Lieutenant in World War II. On September 27, 1942, he was returning in an Army plane to his duty station at Tuskegee, Alabama where he was an instructor when he was forced to make a forced landing at Linthicum Heights, Maryland. He died in the crash.
