Richard M. Stafford served in the U.S. Army Air Corps as a Second Lieutenant during World War II. He died on June 5, 1942, when the pursuit plane he was flying crashed a mile and a half south of Bradley Field, Windsor Locks Army Air Base, Connecticut.
