Matthew Crawford served in the U.S. Army as a First Lieutenant in the 363rd Fighter Squadron, 357th Fighter Group, 8th Air Force in World War II. He was killed in action over Germany on March 2, 1945 when his plane was shot down by flak. He was awarded the Air Medal and the Purple Heart.
