Walter Hofmann served in the U.S. Army as a Lieutenant in the 245th Engineer Combat Battalion, Corps of Engineers during World War II. He was killed in action on April 11, 1945 when he was ambushed while on a Reconnaissance mission near Erfurt, Germany. He was awarded the Silver Star posthumously.
