Judd Harris served in the U.S. Marine Corps as a Captain in the Headquarters and Support Battery, 2nd Separate Pack Howitzer Battalion, 22nd Marine Reinforcement, 5th Artillery Corps, Fleet Marine Force, Marshall Islands during World War II. An Artillery Effect Officer, he was killed on February 22, 1944 when the plane he was in was shot down by Japanese ground fire over Parry Island, Kwajalein Atoll, Marshall Islands. He was awarded the Purple Heart.
