Malcolm Frankel, Jr. served in the U.S. Army Air Corps as a Second Lieutenant in the 307th Bomb Group, 372nd Bomb Squadron during World War II. He was killed on January 8, 1943 when his B-24D Liberator crashed off the coast of Kauai in the Hawaiian Islands.
