Harold Hoover served in the U.S. Army Air Forces as a Captain in the 37th Fighter Squadron, 14th Fighter Group, during World War II. A P-38 Fighter Pilot, he went missing in action after being shot down on a strafing mission near Munich, Germany on April 11, 1945. He was awarded the Air Medal and the Purple Heart.
