Werner Floyd, Jr. served in the U.S. Army Air Corps as a Second Lieutenant in the 567th Bomb Squadron, 389th Bomb Group, 8th Air Force during World War II. He co-piloted the B-24 bomber "Miss Shirley" (42-50478) on July 25, 1944 on a bombing raid over St. Lo, France. After passing over the target, his aircraft was hit by flak and fell out of formation. The bomb bay caught fire, but Floyd kept the plane on an even keel, allowing many of the crew to parachute out.
