Robert Bigelow served as a First Lieutenant in the United States Army Air Forces, 766th Bomber Squadron, 461st Bomber Group (Heavy), during World War II. A pilot of a B-25, he was stationed in Italy and shot down on a mission over Austria on May 24, 1944. He was awarded an Air Medal with 2 Oak Leaf Clusters and a Purple Heart.
